Laser Skin Rejuvenation

I2PL stands for Intense Pulsed Light – a method of treatment where a short but very powerful flash of coloured light is directed at the skin. The light appears coloured because it is carefully filtered to remove certain wavelengths. We all know the dangers of Ultra Violet light, which is why we use sun cream, so obviously, these are removed. Ellipse I2PL treatment also removes wavelengths which cause heating of water in the skin. The wavelengths which are allowed through are carefully chosen to meet the needs of the treatment.

The human body contains two natural pigments that are targeted for Ellipse treatment. When these pigments receive a flash of filtered light, they absorb the light and convert light energy to heat energy. This is a process called “Selective Photothermolysis”. By carefully filtering the light, selecting the correct amount of energy and how long the flash lasts it is possible to treat specific sites (such as hair or age spots) without damaging the surrounding tissue.

The pigment melanin is targeted when removing hair or dealing with brown marks. Melanin is found naturally in the body. Dark hair, age spots, freckles and similar pigment disorders contain higher levels of the pigment than elsewhere in the skin.

When treating sun-damaged skin Ellipse targets melanin in the skin (for example in age-spots) but also targets another pigment, haemoglobin, which is found in blood. The diffuse redness caused by sun-damage is because an unusually large number of microscopic blood vessels are formed below the surface of the skin. Ellipse treatment safely heats up these vessels, causing them to collapse, and stopping future blood supply in a safe and effective manner.

How many treatments will I need?
Ellipse usually recommend a course of 3 – 5 treatments (spaced 4 weeks apart) for best results. However, most clients will see an improvement in around 3 – 4 weeks post first treatment. Results can last up to 6 – 12 months and yearly maintenance or top-up treatments are recommended. This treatment can be performed all year round, provided the client uses recommended sun protection and exercises caution when exposed to sunlight. The treatment is not suitable for coloured, Indian or black skins.
